Richard Holzer Biography

Walking between the rows of sailboats, the twelve year old photographer and his interior decorator dad talked about the essentials of photography… light, composition and avoiding cliche shots. That twelve year old carried a twin reflex Yashica camera; he developed and printed his own pictures. In 1989, after working in high tech for a number of years, the boy was now a man who wanted more in life than working on things which would be obsolete in ten years. He wanted to work on things that go beyond time… art/photography. He didn’t expect hid images to be picked up in a thousand years, but he believed there is an intrinsic goodness in working with the timeless.

This realization caused him to leave the security of none to five jobs. It marked the beginning of an adventure. He sailed along the New England coast and created a portfolio of Cibachrome Images He looked through his portfolio, and decided that his name Rich Holzer wasn’t all that memorable, it would be great to create a name that would linger with the viewer. “What are the key characteristics of my work?” he asked himself. His work was peaceful, playful, ocean oriented and hopefully intelligent. Then it came to him… THE DOLPHINS EYE.

Richard exhibited his work at a meeting of the American Psychological Association. Hospitals, banks and private individuals from as far away as Australia purchased his Cibachromes. In the process of creating a video portfolio to send to potential clients, he discovered he had a gift for working with video images. He began work on a New England Art Video that took three years to complete. This program had no narration yet it was broadcast on WGBH and other New England PBS stations.

The Manchester Union Leader ran a front page story on it with the headline: “An Authentic, spiritual vision of New England”. The Concord Monitor made it the cover story on a Sunday Magazine, and the Boston Globe called it “An Artistic Marvel”. Over the years Richard has sold over 50,000 of these videos. He followed this up with programs on his Telly Award Winning FIRST LIGHT PROGRAMS ON MARTHA’S VINEYARD AND CAPE COD. His most recent program SEA KINDLY explored the lessons to be learned about living a good life from the captains and crews of New England windjammers.

Richard had done a bit of painting and has attended the Northampton Print Making Workshop where he did original etchings. In 2009 Richard was reviewing images he had taken during his windjammer shots and pondered the possibility of simplifying them digitally. As he worked in the digital domain he created what he calls hid Zen Process… his way of getting to the essence of an image by removing information to create an image that looks like a painting.
