R.J. Hohimer describes his paintings as “narrative expressionism“. Taking the jazz musician as a recurring theme and source of personal inspiration, Hohimer captures moments of spontaneous life. “I see my paintings as music and each color as a note. Just as music has a certain rhythm and interplay, my paintings have colors that repeat and interact.”
In all of his work Hohimer explores the psychological effects of color, tracing his theories from the experiments of the French chemist, Chevreul, who influenced George Seurat. Bending colors on canvas in the manner of Cezanne and heightening the intensity and brilliance through careful juxtaposition of tones, Hohimer produces an emotional energy similar to the works of Van Gogh, Gauguin and Emil Nolde.
Critics have said that Hohimer’s art envelopes the viewer by creating alluring scenarios and inviting active participation in the story the artist has begun. The uniqueness of this art is that each time we look, we eagerly walk into his world. His art introduces us to big city street life… nights filled with hot jazz and exotic perfume… far away beaches at sunset. The setting are romantic and vibrant. If we haven’t been there, we wished we had.
R.J. Hohimer is a storyteller: He paints his stories on paper and canvas. We look at his art and are swept up by his energy and excitement. Not wanting the story to end, we imagine the next chapter… where the band always plays till dawn, and the sunset at the beach always lasts a little longer.
